Prime Minister Modi Urges Self-Sufficiency in Healthcare and Reduction of Reliance on Foreign Nations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India has weaponized life-saving tools like vaccines, drugs, and medical equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Prime Minister claimed that his administration has been working tirelessly to reduce India's dependence on foreign countries for its healthcare needs.

During a post-budget webcast on "Health and Medical Research," Modi stated that India's healthcare sector has long been plagued by a lack of an integrated strategy and a long-term vision. He emphasized that his administration had taken a "whole of government" approach to solving this problem.

Modi also highlighted the many steps his administration has taken to encourage entrepreneurship in the healthcare industry, stating that Indian businesspeople should ensure that India becomes self-sufficient and doesn't need to import any technology.

The Prime Minister lauded the Ayushman Bharat, a government health insurance program, and Jan Aushadhi centers, where medications are sold at lower prices, stating that they have saved residents Rs 80,000 crore and Rs 20,000 crore, respectively. Modi added that making healthcare more affordable has been a key focus.

Modi called on the Indian pharmaceutical industry to build on the trust it gained during the outbreak and capitalize on it. He believes that there should be a distinction between the pre- and post-Covid periods in the healthcare sector since the pandemic has shown that even developed healthcare systems in wealthy nations can be decimated by a catastrophe of this magnitude.

Modi also stated that his administration prioritizes people's overall wellness over just healthcare treatment. He noted that a healthy ecosystem is now developing in tier 2 cities and other smaller settlements due to the expansion of essential healthcare infrastructure.

The Prime Minister also stated that the government is putting a lot of effort into ensuring that individuals have access to testing and treatment centers close to where they live. This will help in reducing the burden on larger cities and improve healthcare access for individuals in remote areas.
